We work the day, we work the night.
We have to weekdays to get them right.

Saturdays and Sundays seems to fly;
With a sorrow wink of an eye.

I doubt my capabilities appear to grow;
As days advance does not meet the goal.

4G Army - A People Organization

The beauty of National Service lies in the very subtle similarities it bears with studying during schools. When you take a step closer to take a further look, actually, the similarities are so much more prominent.

In schools, we, as students are trained to be equipped with a critical mind. This is done through Mathematics, Science, Humanities, and Language classes that offers a wide variety of topics to train and develop our critical thinking. Adequate understanding of each subject can only be achieved if a student consistently clarifies his doubts or when he ask critical questions that will clarify his doubts. These answer that the student receive will bridge either the logic gap that is essential for deeper understanding. Before we graduate, our critical thinking skills are being tested and benchmark in National Level or even International Level Examinations.

National Service is no difference. As our Army slowly transit to to Learning Army, Thinking Soldiers model, we, as servicemen needs to understand how critical our ideas and thoughts can better shape the Army. For Corporal First Class and below, that often are the ones on the ground executing all the groundwork, their feedback  are indeed essential to improve the organization. This is because they experience the problems in the organization first hand. For Warrant Officers and below that usually have a wider picture, they need to be proactive to be a change agent. As WOSpec interacts more closely with the servicemen on the ground, servicemen usually complains to them about their problem. For a Learning Army, WOSpec need to challenge the status quo and change whatever that is within their control to mitigate the issues. For Officers, they are the one who does the planning and have the greatest power to conduct change that will have lasting impact on the organization. They need to tap on their critical thinking skills attained during prior education to question the system and to challenge status quo. This is akin to how one usually pester his teacher to clarify doubts and explanations that doesn’t make sense.

Indeed, for a Learning Army, everyone needs to be a Thinking Soldier. To be one, we need to tap on our critical, logical, and systematic thinking process to analysis problems and propose solutions to our superior. Higher rank only means greater ability to implement change. However, all servicemen should proactively feedback and offers solutions to shape our next generation of Army systems and workflow.

While “forced implementation” are already on the ground e.g. compulsory submission of USMS, these initiatives needs to be treated with the right mind and right spirit for the full benefits to be reap.

For our 4G Army to be successful, our society must first change our attitude and the stigma associated with National Service. It is definitely no a mere rite of passage for everyone but a time where all Singaporean males can contribute their ideas to further strengthen their country’s defend.

Loyalty to Country appeals to emotions not logic.

Revelations, after revelations, after revelations.

– Reflections, Week 11

I looked in the mirror with a smiling eye,
my face looked bright as though I could fly.

I recall the moment 2 months before,
my reflection was dull and I can’t soar.

Rewind my life further by nine,
the mirror said there’s no life like mine.

Mirror, mirror on the wall,
who is the right me of them all?

– Reflection, Week 10

No one owe Singapore a living?

Leadership. Service. Purpose. Duty. Honor. Country?

Mountains are not insurmountable.
Oceans are not unbridgeable.
Strangers are not unconnect’able.
Armies are not unbeatable.
Territories are not unconquerable.
Powers are not unstoppable.
Why not us all stop being so gullible.

– Reflection - Week 6

What do I treasure?
